In 1988 a grower found a single vine in Murillo de Rio Leza bearing white grapes where the rest of the bunch was red, a spontaneous mutation of Tempranillo. It was propagated, studied and finally authorised in Rioja in 2007. Paco Garcia are based in that same village, which makes this something close to a local speciality.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eEl Yergo is the unoaked version, made to show the grape rather than the cellar. Pear and white peach, a floral top note, and a good streak of citrus running underneath. What sets it apart from most Rioja whites is the texture, which is broader and more savoury than the aromatics suggest, finishing dry and faintly saline.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eServe it cold with white fish, roast vegetables or a Spanish tortilla.
