Birichino Grenache 2014
Grenache, but not as you know it. Made using techniques associated with red Burgundy this has a very pale colour and a very complex nose of apricot, kirsch, winter spice, wild raspberry and bramble lead to a palate this is light, taught and fresh and laden with high pitched cherry. You’d be mistaken for thinking this is Marsannay. Birichino is a spin-off from the Bonny Doon vineyard, both partners Alex Krause and John Locke having worked with the famous Randall Grahm. Their aim is to make fresh, modern style California wine, a world away from the sweet and oaky identikits that have long dominated the market. Birichino means naughty or mischievous. Perfect with grilled meats.
