Caves Yves Cuilleron Syrah, 'Les Vignes d'a Côté' IGP 2018
Yves Cuilleron is a fourth-generation vigneron and has made this Domaine one of the top names in the Northern Rhone. The estate is known for combining the best of modern practice with a traditional, hands-off approach in both vineyard and winery. Yves' wines are about purity of fruit, his Saint Joseph and Côte-Rôtie wines are seriously impressive, but for a fraction of the price, his IGP level wines offer much of the same character and are every bit as well made. Matured in oak barriques this is full of ripe, rounded blackberry and cherry fruit with the distinctive earthy, leathery and black pepper notes of the Syrah grape.
This full-bodied red is made with hand-picked grapes, and no pesticides are used on the vines. The same philosophy is used in the winery, wild yeasts, no additions and minimal use of sulphur. The wine spent eight months in barriques before it was bottled, and the jammy flavour profile makes it a great pairing with charcuterie.
You can judge a lot about a winemaker based on the entry-level wines they make, this is top class for the price, a great introduction to the distinctly specific Northern Rhone expression of Syrah.
