Moric Blaufränkisch Burgenland 2017
Moric’s Roland Velich has become an internationally recognized wine celebrity for his work with old-vine Blaufränkisch in Austria’s Burgenland DAC. Widely regarded as the standard-setting producer of reds from Blaufränkisch, Moric is an important Austrian name to know.
Native to eastern Austria, as well as parts of Hungary, there known as Kékfrankos, and elsewhere in central/eastern Europe, Blaufränkisch shares genetic lineage with Pinot Noir and can possess certain character traits with great Cru Beaujolais and Northern Rhône Syrah.
This wine shows a seamless melding of bright, snappy fruit and profound depth. There is so much power and energy, yet it retains a delightful freshness of character.
Fermented in a mix of open-topped wooden vats and stainless steel tanks, then aged in used cooperage of various sizes for about a year. Bottled without fining and filtration and with only a minimal sulphur addition on bottling, the wine is beautifully pure and expressive, with terrific freshness.
