Women in Wine: The Trailblazers Shaping the Industry

Discover the trailblazers shaping the wine industry. Our Women in Wine collection celebrates the talent, passion, and craftsmanship of female winemakers and estate owners worldwide. From pioneering figures to rising stars, each bottle in this selection tells a story of innovation, heritage, and dedication.

The Unique Perspective of Female Winemakers

Women bring a unique touch to winemaking, often focusing on balance, finesse, and sustainability. Studies have even suggested that women may have a heightened sense of smell and taste, making them exceptional at blending and assessing wine.

More than ever, female-led wineries are prioritising sustainability and organic farming. Women are at the forefront of pushing boundaries, from low-intervention wines to unexpected grape varieties. Many female winemakers focus on mentorship, helping the next generation of women succeed in the industry.

Since our inception, we’ve been stocking some fantastic wines from female producers, and of course, we have our favourites!

1. Sybille Kuntz (Germany) - Reinventing the Mosel

Sybille Kuntz is a fantastic producer from Mosel in Germany. She grows Riesling on her sites, which were classified as a grand cru by Napoleon's decree in 1804, when the area was under French rule. Her vines—some of which were planted in the 1920s—are situated on steep 70% inclined slopes on the banks of the Mosel river and are made to work hard by the Devonian slate on which they grow.

It was important to her that she was free to create a Mosel riesling “authentic to" the terroir of her vineyards.

Her stylish bottles are colour-coded according to the grapes' ripeness level: The green-labeled Qualtätswein symbolizes ripe, green fruits; the blue Kabinett reflects the minerality of the Devonian slate; and the golden Spätlese depicts the berries when they are fully ripe. Her orange-labeled Organic Orange Riesling is a great recent addition to her range.

2. Brigitte Chevalier (France) – Redefining Languedoc Wines at Domaine de Cébène

Domaine de Cébène was established byBrigitte Chevalier in 2007 on the heights of the listed site of Faugères, in the Haut-Languedoc, and has been gaining in praise and recognition year on year. Farmed organically, the terraced vineyards open out onto an imposing panorama which sets the coastline on one side and the Pyrenees and the majestic Mont Canigou in the distance to the west.

Brigitte explains that “our motivation has always been to create several distinct wine profiles” that “try to express the different facets of our terroirs”, and this she does. From the fruit forward Ex Arena and the smooth everyday drinking At the Venvole to the full-bodied Les Bancels and rich Felgaria Domaine de Cébène delightfully covers all tastes.

3. Gina Giugni (USA) – The Biodynamic Force Behind Lady of Sunshine

The Californian Gina Giugni started Lady of the Sunshine in 2017, focusing on the regenerative, organic, and biodynamic farming that she learned from her father.

Born into the farming and winemaking lifestyle, her 6.5 acre Chene vineyard is located in the Edna Valley appellation on the Central Coast. Her mission with Lady of the Sunshine was to create “fun, fresh, what we call, breakfast wines, that are built on the mantra, ‘know your farmer’.”

The homely artwork for the labels such as the Chevey Sauvignon Blanc - Chardonnay Edna Valley are based on hand stitched 1950s embroideries. Gina’s mother’s handwriting is on the cork, and Gina’s across all the other script & doodles.

4. Judith Beck (Austria) – A Pioneer of Natural Wines in Burgenland

Judith Beck’s winery is in the Burgenland village of Gols, near Lake Neusiedl - an ideal spot for viticulture. She took over the family estate in 2004, shifting it to organic, then biodynamic practices in 2007. Judith now lives in the middle of her vineyard, her commitment to quality and sustainability shining through her wines and coming from this deep relationship to her own vines.

Her wines are in the best sense natural and authentic. She says: “International style can be produced by everyone, everywhere. My wines are my own. They are here and now. And that is the most beautiful thing for me. Like my life in the vineyards.”

Her Ink featuring a flourishing ink drawing of a squid, is a blend of Zweigelt and St. Laurent. Fresh with pronounced sour cherry fruit, it has elegant spiciness in the finish.

5. Patrizia Felluga (Italy) – A Friulian Icon at Zuani

Patrizia Felluga is a fifth-generation winemaker, daughter of the internationally recognized Marco Felluga. In 2001, she founded her own Zuani Winery in the heart of the Collio district of the Friuli-Venezia-Giulia region and set about her ambition of making a terroir-based wine with her two children, Antonio and Caterina.

Patrizia is notoriously down-to-earth despite having a reputation as a rockstar in winemaking, and the family has a strong sense of expressing their location in their wines. They say that “the soul of the wine is created from the soil that gives it life, the light that shines on it and the air that gives it fragrance.”

Zuani wines come from seven hectares of fifteen——to forty-year-old Friulano, Pinot Grigio, Chardonnay, and Sauvignon vines, which create the white blend Collio Bianco and the exceptional Sodevo Ribolla Gialla.
