Description

Tahbilk Winery, a family-owned estate since 1860 located in the Nagambie Lakes region of Central Victoria, is celebrated for its aged Marsanne, produced from some of the world’s oldest vines dating back to 1927. The winery, named ‘tabilk tabilk’ meaning ‘place of many waterholes’, reflects its rich environment along the Goulburn River. With a commitment to environmental sustainability, Tahbilk became carbon neutral in 2013 and was honored as ‘Winery of the Year’ in 2016.

The 2016 vintage benefited from a balance of rain and warm weather, resulting in wines with distinct varietal flavors and elegance. The vineyards, situated at 134 metres elevation on sandy loam soils, are sustainably managed with practices like composting and mulching to promote soil health.

The winemaking process is reductive, avoiding oxygen to maintain the wine’s fresh, fruity character. Hand-picked Marsanne grapes are destemmed, crushed, and fermented with neutral yeasts at low temperatures, stopping the ferment with a slight residual sugar to retain crispness. The wine is then stabilised and filtered, without undergoing malolactic conversion.

This Marsanne exudes complexity with age, offering aromas of honeysuckle and toast. The palate is rich with honeyed lemon citrus fruits, culminating in a chalky, mineral freshness. It’s a testament to Tahbilk’s historic legacy and their mastery of the Marsanne varietal.
