Grown at around 450 metres in the Valle del Sabato on the Avellino-Benevento border, this is a characterful, unoaked expression of Irpinia's noble Aglianico grape. The 2021 pours a deep ruby with garnet edges and offers a fragrant, savoury nose of dark cherry, blackberry and damson underpinned by violet, dried herbs and a distinctly southern note of tobacco, leather and warm spice. The palate is medium to full bodied and unmistakably Aglianico: fresh acidity, firm, grippy tannins and a taut mineral backbone framing brambly black fruit, liquorice and a faint volcanic smokiness. It finishes long, dry and gently peppery, with real structure for the price point. A cellar-worthy, food-friendly red that rewards a decant and calls out for rich meats, ragù or hard mountain cheeses.
