Description

Nice intensity with an interesting nose of ripe and tropical fruits, sweet notes of honey, linden, spicy and citrus fruit notes, licorice root and almonds. It is a very well-balanced wine in the mouth, a full-bodied wine with high alcohol content but at the same time still fresh and strongly sapid. Even a more unique wine because of its strongly persistent smell and taste with an iodate finish.

It is an amazing match with stock fish (dried cod) "all'anconetana" (typical local dish) or baked salt-cured cod and also very good with smoked fish and beccafico sardine. It combines very well with foie gras or paté de foie gras, roast goose, duck, turkey, it is also perfect with cheeses, especially mature ones.

All the pristine Verdicchio grapes are sourced from our own vineyard in Contrada Balciana. It is characterised by a small yield per vinestock and differently timed hand-picking. The time of the harvest can change depending on the course of the year and usually takes place from the beginning of November till the middle of the same month. During the grape picking time, extreme care is necessary (small crates) so as not to split the grapes which have reached the correct level of ripeness. This completes the first stage after which the normal techniques (with the exclusive use of stainless steel tanks) are adopted in the winery taking the same care so as not to ruin the preceding work.

The complexity of all these processes means that the yearly production is restricted to about 15.000 bottles. After bottling, the wine continues to develop and refine achieving a taste of incomparable finesse.

"The 2021 Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi Classico Superiore Balciana's nose is enticing with a cascade of dusty florals, exotic spices, orange blossoms and nectarines. More like nectar than wine, it soothes with weighty textures. It comes across as oily in feel yet has a core of citrus-tinged acidity and salty minerals that provide a lovely balance. This leaves the palate saturated with tart grapefruit concentration, tapering offyouthfully tense, saline and structured. So complex and inward in its youthful state, over time, I expect the 2021 to stand shoulder to shoulder with the top vintages of Balciana."

Sartarelli

Sartarelli is one of the few Italian wineries which focuses exclusively on a single varietal production. Their motto proudly declares ‘In Verdicchio Veritas’: In Verdicchio we trust. Situated on the left of the Esino River, Sartarelli is in the heartlands of Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi DOC. A baker by trade, Ferruccio Sartarelli founded the winery in 1972. His daughter Donatella followed in his footsteps. She oversees the company alongside her husband Patrizio and two children Tommaso and Caterina.

Abruzzo

Abruzzo, located in central Italy along the Adriatic coast, is renowned for its robust and distinctive wines. The region features a range of climates and terrains, from coastal areas to mountainous inland regions, ideal for viticulture. It is particularly famous for its Montepulciano d'Abruzzo, a full-bodied red wine with rich flavors of dark fruit, spices, and earthy notes. The area also produces excellent Trebbiano d'Abruzzo, a crisp white with fresh acidity and notes of green apple and citrus. Abruzzo’s diverse terroirs and traditional winemaking practices, combined with a growing focus on quality, offer a captivating wine experience for enthusiasts seeking both bold reds and refreshing whites.
