Description

If you are looking for a Syrah that rivals Cote-Rotie, look no further than Porseleinberg. This wine is born from a harsh and rocky mountain where growing grapes is a challenge but also a reward. Marc Kent of Boekenhoutskloof and Callie Louw, the farmer and guardian of this unique vineyard, have created a masterpiece of organic and biodynamic wine-making. Using only whole bunches and concrete fermentation, they let the wine age in Concrete Eggs and Foudre. The result is a single-vineyard wine that stands out as one of the best in Swartland. It has a vibrant and expressive fruit character that balances richness and freshness with stunning clarity.

Porseleinberg

In the Swartland, just a few miles south-east of Riebeek-Kasteel and perched on a rugged outcrop lies Porseleinberg. The farm is a stark contrast to the delicacy and fragility to which its name suggests. This extreme terroir of brutal Schist soil that, Callie Louw admits, is the toughest land he’s ever farmed. The resulting wine is a Syrah of incredible intensity, more akin to Cornas or Hermitage. Callie carefully prints each wine label on his restored 1940’s Heidelberg Press.

Swartland

Swartland, located in South Africa's Western Cape, is a dynamic wine region celebrated for its robust and distinctive wines. Its Mediterranean climate, marked by hot, dry summers and cool, wet winters, combined with its varied soil types, creates ideal conditions for viticulture.
The area is renowned for its powerful reds, particularly from Syrah and Grenache, which exhibit bold fruit flavours, spice, and a characteristic earthiness. It also excels in producing expressive Chenin Blancs, known for their richness, complexity, and vibrant acidity.
