Description

Soalheiro Alvarinho has a bright, lemon-yellow colour. This wine is distinguished by its fresh and elegant fragrance, revealing the aromatic complexity of Alvarinho variety. The flavour has intense tropical and mineral notes that balance perfectly with the acidity and moderate alcohol content.

Soalheiro Alvarinho has the elegance to make an excellent apéritif and complement lighter flavoured dishes. It pairs well with foods such as seafood, grilled fish, white meats, mature cheeses, smoked meats or Asian and Mediterranean gastronomies.

Monção and Melgaço, the most northern region of Portugal, is protected by mountains that form a unique microclimate. This allows a perfect marriage between rainfall, temperature and the number of hours of sunshine needed for the best maturation of Alvarinho grapes. The microclimate in Monção and Melgaço is especially important during ripening, when hot days alternate with cold nights, enabling the development of fresh and fruity aromas and an acidity that is present, but moderate.

Quinta de Soalheiro

In 1974, João António Cerdeira and his parents decided to break from tradition and plant a full parcel as a continuous vineyard of Alvarinho. This parcel was called ’Soalheiro’, meaning ‘sunny’, referring to its location, exposed to sun all day long. Since this first innovation the Cerdeira family has been linked to the development of Alvarinho cultivation in Melgaço. Today, third-generation family members have embraced this spirit of innovation.

Vinho Verde

Vinho Verde DOC sits in the far north-west of Portugal; most vineyards are situated along the verdant slopes of the Minho river. The Atlantic influence in particular is known for bringing great freshness to the wines: bright acidity, modest alcohol and often a light spritz. Vinho Verde translates as "green wine", and there is debate as to whether that refers to the lush colour of the landscape or to the wines themselves with their bright acidity that recalls grapes just on the border of full ripeness.

Alvarinho and Loureiro are the principal white varieties, with Alvarinho at its most concentrated in the sub-region of Monção e Melgaço along the border with Spain. The grapes Arinto (known locally as Pedernã) and Trajadura are often employed to add citrus lift to blends. Beyond the fresh, zesty styles with subtle pétillance that many people know, an increasing number of growers are producing single-variety and single-estate wines with fantastic ageability. Traditional method sparkling wines as well as rosés and deeply-coloured reds made from Vinhão are also a growing presence.
