Weingut Salwey in Oberrotweil is proud of its history as a classic family-run estate, but tradition is only part of the story. Konrad, the third generation of Salwey to run the winery, focuses on the Pinot varieties traditional to the Kaiserstuhl. The estate is renowned for its fine vineyards, including three Erste Lagen: Oberrotweiler Henkenberg, Eichberg and Kirchberg. Konrad is just as well known for his willingness to experiment, with the daring to try new techniques and the nerve to move on when they don’t work, all in the pursuit of better wine. The Kaiserstuhl Spätburgunder is the result: silky and seductive, with juicy red cherry, wild strawberry and raspberry fruit, a touch of warm spice and a fine, savoury finish. It is elegant yet generous, with real depth and length, and it more than holds its own against Pinot Noir from anywhere in the world.
