Description

Tahbilk Winery, a family-owned estate since 1860 located in the Nagambie Lakes region of Central Victoria, is celebrated for its aged Marsanne, produced from some of the world’s oldest vines dating back to 1927. The winery, named ‘tabilk tabilk’ meaning ‘place of many waterholes’, reflects its rich environment along the Goulburn River. With a commitment to environmental sustainability, Tahbilk became carbon neutral in 2013 and was honored as ‘Winery of the Year’ in 2016.

The long 2017 growing season sees delicious early flavour development with fresh and zesty lemon/lime, pear and guava fruits alongside apple blossom and jasmine aromas.
Juicy and taut with savoury and mineral touches, careful cellaring (out to 2026) will realise distinctive marmalade, toast and honeyed notes.

The winemaking process is reductive, avoiding oxygen to maintain the wine’s fresh, fruity character. Hand-picked Marsanne grapes are destemmed, crushed, and fermented with neutral yeasts at low temperatures, stopping the ferment with a slight residual sugar to retain crispness. The wine is then stabilised and filtered, without undergoing malolactic conversion.

This Marsanne exudes complexity with age, offering aromas of honeysuckle and toast. The palate is rich with honeyed lemon citrus fruits, culminating in a chalky, mineral freshness. It’s a testament to Tahbilk’s historic legacy and their mastery of the Marsanne varietal.

Tahbilk

Tahbilk is the oldest family owned winery and vineyard in Victoria, Australia. The Purbrick family’s interest in Tahbilk started in London in the early 1920s with an offer to Reginald Purbrick of a glass of Chateau Tahbilk brandy, accompanied by the words ‘This might be of interest to you, Purbrick'. Perhaps Reg was reminded of this event when he decided to purchase the property sight unseen in 1925. Reg’s son Eric, returned to the Estate in 1932 amid the Depression, forgoing his law degree. Today the vineyard is led by the fifth generation, Eric's granddaughter Hayley, who has brought the winery into the 21st century, ensuring the family leaves a sustainable legacy for future generations.
