Description

From the commune of Martillac in Pessac-Léognan, Château Ferran is a blend of 77% Merlot, 13% Petit Verdot and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, grown on limestone soils. The grapes were picked between late September and mid-October, given a long 30-day maceration and then aged for 12 months in oak barrels, around a third of them new. The estate has held HVE 3 certification since 2018 and is farmed sustainably, with no herbicides, no harmful chemical treatments, and mating disruption used in place of insecticides.

In the glass it shows a mid to deep garnet colour with a paler rim. The nose is fresh and aromatic, with dark cherry and plum fruit layered with dried herbs, cracked black pepper and a nutty, hazelnut note from the oak, all unmistakably Pessac-Léognan in character. The palate is medium-bodied, opening with ripe, generous dark fruit, while the tannins are fine and silky with a gentle grip rather than any hardness. The finish is dry, savoury and impressively long, with juicy fruit carrying through to the end.

Chateau Ferran

Château Ferran is a Martillac estate in Pessac-Léognan, linked to Montesquieu and owned by the Béraud-Sudreau family since 1885. Philippe and Ghislaine Lacoste have led its revival since 1999. Vines grow on Miocene clay and limestone with some gravel. Reds are Merlot-led, with Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot, hand-harvested and sorted, fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel, then aged around twelve months in oak, roughly 30 per cent new. The whites blend Sémillon and Sauvignon Blanc. Style is fresh and mineral.

Bordeaux

Bordeaux, one of the most prestigious wine regions in the world, is located in southwestern France and is celebrated for its exceptional wines. It benefits from a temperate maritime climate, influenced by the nearby Atlantic Ocean, providing ideal conditions for viticulture. It is particularly renowned for its red wines, primarily blends of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc, offering rich, complex flavours and excellent ageing potential. Notable sub-regions include Médoc, Saint-Émilion, and Pomerol. Bordeaux also produces exquisite white wines, both dry, from Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon, and sweet, from the Sauternes and Barsac areas. The region's unique terroir, combined with centuries-old winemaking traditions, results in wines of unparalleled quality and distinction. Bordeaux remains a must-visit destination for wine enthusiasts seeking world-class wines and a rich viticultural heritage.
