Chateau Margaux Pavillon Rouge du Chateau Margaux 2018

Description

This is the younger sibling of the legendary Chateau Margaux, but it’s no slouch. It’s a blend of mostly Cabernet Sauvignon (69%), with some Merlot (19%), Petit Verdot (9%) and Cabernet Franc (3%) for balance and complexity. The colour is a deep purple-red, and the nose is a burst of cherry, mulberry, cassis, chocolate and graphite. The palate is rich and smooth, with layers of black fruits, mocha and herbs. It’s not a shy wine, but it’s also elegant and refined. It has a long finish that keeps you coming back for more. It’s entering its drinking window and can age gracefully for years.

"Deepest cherry red. Black core and deep dark rim. Tiny little wild blackberries on the nose. Subtle, dark and intense on the nose, gently fragrant and not closed though not jumping out of the glass. Super-fine texture, rounded and creamy even with the paper-fine tannins. Notable freshness and beautifully dry but not drying texture. Very moreish and much more approachable than many wines tasted this morning at the Union des Grands Crus de Bordeaux tasting, even though there is a serious charge of tannins. Very long and a wine you would really want to drink, not just taste. Deeply concentrated but not heavy. (JH)" 17 Points, JancisRobinison.com.
