Description

From the Oltina DOC appellation in Dobrogea in Romania, this is a 50-50 blend of the native Fetească Neagră with the better-known Merlot. 50% of the wine was matured in new French oak barrels while the other half was kept in used barrels for 11 months. This is a wonderful, complex wine with and abundance of cherry and blackberry notes, also spices, mint, vanilla and balsamic vinegar. It's rich and powerful with dark chocolate and spices, yet subtle with fine, well-integrated tannins and long finish.

Alira

Alira Winery is a boutique Romanian winery located in the Mehedinți region, near the banks of the Danube. Specialising in premium wines, Alira combines modern techniques with traditional craftsmanship, focusing on indigenous and international grape varieties. The winery’s name is a fusion of Aliman and Rasova, the two villages where its vineyards are located, benefiting from a unique microclimate that allows for balanced ripening and rich expressions of terroir.

Alira produces elegant reds and fresh whites, with a particular focus on Fetească Neagră, Romania’s iconic red grape, alongside Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Chardonnay. The wines are known for their intense fruit concentration, silky tannins, and well-integrated oak influence.

Their winemaking approach emphasizes low yields, hand-harvesting, and traditional ageing methods, often using French oak barrels to enhance complexity. Fermentation is conducted with minimal intervention, allowing the natural character of the grapes to shine. Alira’s wines showcase the depth, structure, and elegance of Romania’s evolving wine scene.

Mehedinți

The Mehedinți region in southwestern Romania is an emerging wine-producing area known for its rich soils, warm climate, and diverse terroir. Located along the Danube River, it benefits from a continental climate with Mediterranean influences, providing long, sunny growing seasons that allow grapes to ripen fully while retaining freshness and balanced acidity. Winemakers here focus on both traditional and modern techniques, producing full-bodied reds and vibrant whites. Indigenous varieties such as Fetească Neagră thrive, offering deep, spicy, and well-structured wines, while international grapes like Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, and Chardonnay also perform exceptionally well.

With a commitment to low-intervention winemaking, many producers emphasize hand-harvesting, controlled fermentation, and careful oak ageing, often using French or Romanian oak barrels. The wines from Mehedinți are known for their ripe fruit, smooth tannins, and elegant minerality. The region is gaining recognition for its quality-driven approach, blending tradition with innovation to create wines that reflect Romania’s unique terroir.
