Domaine Jean Maupertuis

Jean Maupertuis is widely regarded as a pioneer of natural, sulphur-free winemaking in Auvergne. Since founding his eponymous estate in 1996, he has cultivated around 4 hectares across high-altitude volcanic basalt, sand, and marl soils. His vineyards, some over 40 to 100 years old, grow Gamay d’Auvergne, Gamay Noir à Jus Blanc, Pinot Noir, Noirfleurien, and a little Chardonnay, all farmed organically and harvested by hand.

In the cellar, grapes are hand-sorted and typically undergo cold semi-carbonic or full carbonic maceration with native yeasts. Fermentation begins in tanks before ageing in old barrels. The wines are bottled unfiltered and without added sulphur, producing vibrant, light-bodied wines that capture the freshness and volcanic character of Auvergne.
