Spain

Spain has more land under vine than any other country, and its wines have never been more exciting. Long known for Rioja and sherry, it is now just as celebrated for old-vine Garnacha, salty Atlantic whites and growers reviving forgotten grapes and regions.

Rioja and Ribera del Duero remain the heartland of Tempranillo, from fresh, fruit-led joven to long-aged Gran Reserva. In the north-west, Rías Baixas gives us bright, saline Albariño, while Bierzo and Ribeira Sacra show just how good Mencía can be. Priorat’s slate-grown Garnacha and Cariñena make some of the country’s most powerful reds, Catalonia brings traditional method sparkling in Cava, and in Andalucía, sherry remains one of the most underrated wines in the world.
