Description

A crisp yet generously textured Assyrtiko, with notes of lime, citrus blossom and peach, highlighted by mineral overtones. Beautifully balanced with a long, lemony finish.

This wine was made from free-run juice which was fermented with wild and cultivated yeasts at controlled temperatures in stainless steel tanks, where it spent two to four weeks on the fine lees. Maturation in stainless steel retained the freshness and Assyrtiko expression of this special terroir.

The vision to create Akrathos began in 2007, when Babis Bekris followed his dream to make wine in the mountainous terroir of Chalkidiki.  The ideal site was discovered after exhaustive and targeted research in Northern Greece's Chalkidiki, in the municipality of Aristotle. Constructing a winery so close to the birthplace of Artistotle's historic 'Akanthos' wine felt fortuitous; thus the name Akrathos was chosen. The first five hectares were planted in 2009, implementing minimal-impact methods in an effort to preserve the ecological integrity of the area and the terroir. An artisan winery followed in 2014. The unique site, combined with thoughtful and precise winemaking under the watchful eye of the highly sought-after consultant, Kyriakos Kynigopolous, has resulted in rich, concentrated wines that age well.

Akrathos

Founded with a commitment to preserving and enhancing local viticultural traditions, Akrathos focuses on producing a diverse range of wines from indigenous Greek grape varieties such as Xinomavro, Limnio, and Assyrtiko. The winery is known for its elegant and well-structured reds, whites, and rosés, which exhibit rich flavours, balance, and complexity.

Northern Greece

Northern Greece, known for its varied landscapes and cooler climate, excels in distinctive wines. The diverse terroirs, including mountains and plains, create ideal conditions for viticulture. Macedonia is particularly noted for Xinomavro, a red grape producing deep, complex wines with ageing potential, especially from Naoussa and Amynteo. The area also shines with aromatic whites from Assyrtiko and Malagousia, featuring fresh, citrusy profiles. Thrace adds to the region's reputation with robust reds and crisp whites. Northern Greece offers a rich and varied wine experience, combining traditional techniques with unique terroirs for exceptional quality and character.
