Description

Adi Badenhorst has been described as many things, but near the top of the list is always farmer, winemaker and parrot breeder. The 2021 Papegaai dry red (for lack of a better classification) brings together those three things in one story and one bottle.

The grapes come from both Adi's farm and his neighbour’s excellent fruit. Most vines are mountain-sloped bush vines. We maintain that high-quality fruit comes from old un-irrigated bush vines grown on a variety of granite soils that are naturally low yielding. The wine is mainly from the Cinsault variety, along with a little bit of everything else grown on the farm.

AA Badenhorst

AA Badenhorst Family Wines are grown, made and matured on Kalmoesfontein farm in the Swartland appellation of South Africa. The property is owned by the “dynamic and good-looking cousins” Hein and Adi Badenhorst. Their fathers were born and farmed together in Constantia. The cousins have restored a neglected cellar on the farm that was last used in the 1930′s. They now proudly farm together, practice biological farming and make natural wines in the traditional manner.

Swartland

Swartland, located in South Africa's Western Cape, is a dynamic wine region celebrated for its robust and distinctive wines. Its Mediterranean climate, marked by hot, dry summers and cool, wet winters, combined with its varied soil types, creates ideal conditions for viticulture.
The area is renowned for its powerful reds, particularly from Syrah and Grenache, which exhibit bold fruit flavours, spice, and a characteristic earthiness. It also excels in producing expressive Chenin Blancs, known for their richness, complexity, and vibrant acidity.
