Description

Solstice is a striking expression of Danbury Ridge’s dedication to crafting distinctive wines. While renowned for their still wines, this sparkling project has been quietly evolving since the estate’s first harvest—bringing the intensity and precision of still winemaking into the sparkling realm.

A blend of Chardonnay, Pinot Meunier and Pinot Noir, Solstice 1st Edition is built around the 2019 vintage, with 75% of the wine undergoing up to six months’ fermentation in oak barrels—mostly neutral, with a touch of new oak for added texture. The remaining 25% comes from a foudre-aged solera of reserve wines from 2018 to 2020, introducing further depth and complexity.

The dosage liqueur, aged in oak barrels and described by winemaker Liam Idzikowski as “tasting like PX”, brings a hint of maturity and sweetness without overwhelming the wine’s fresh core.

The result is radiant and expressive, with flavours of apricot, blood orange, orange blossom and toasted almonds. A subtle oxidative edge and tightly wound acidity balance the wine’s generous mouthfeel.

Solstice isn’t your typical aperitif-style sparkling—it’s a textured, character-driven wine designed for those who seek something more refined and distinctive in their glass.

Danbury Ridge

Danbury Ridge was founded by two generations of the Bunker family: Michael and Heather and their daughters. The fields had long been scorned by local farmers but it was suggested that they many prove ideal for vines. The first vines were planted in 2014 with a focus on Pinot Noir and Chardonnay clones which could best exploit the unique mesoclimate. After just a few seasons they were producing grapes of a quality and ripeness previously unseen in the UK.

Essex

The Essex region in England is an emerging wine area gaining acclaim for its high-quality wines. Situated in the southeast of the country, Essex benefits from one of England's warmest and driest climates, which is ideal for viticulture. It is particularly renowned for its still wines, including elegant and aromatic Bacchus, often likened to Sauvignon Blanc for its vibrant acidity and fresh, fruity character. The area also excels in producing excellent sparkling wines using traditional methods, made from classic varieties like Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. With its combination of favourable climate, diverse soils, and innovative winemaking techniques, Essex offers a promising and distinctive wine experience for enthusiasts seeking premium English wines.
