Founded in 2008 by Gianfranco Sabbatino and Andrea Barzagli, Le Casematte is situated within the Messina Province of Sicily. The winery owes its name to the presence of two small forts or 'pillboxes' situated in the vineyard that date back to WW1. The vineyard overlooks the Straight of Messina, the stretch of sea that separates Calabria from Sicilia. Le Casematte's currently has 14 hectares under vine, at an altitude between 820 and 1,215 feet above sea level.
"Light crimson with soft rim. Fragrant with wild strawberry. Super-fine dry tannins, almost chalky. Scented with tart red fruits on the palate. Deliciously fresh and vibrant. -16.5 Points." Julia Harding MW, jancisrobinson.com (April 2023)
