Deep, inky ruby with a violet core that hints at the variety's extraordinary pigmentation. On the nose, ripe black cherry and damson sit alongside dried violet, a touch of liquorice and a balsamic lift that is classically Sousão. There's real aromatic intensity here, with subtle notes of dark spice and a whisper of mint keeping things fresh.
The palate delivers everything the nose promises. This is a full-bodied, structured wine, but the 12 months in 500-litre French oak have given it a velvety texture that softens what could otherwise be a formidable tannin profile. The acidity, a hallmark of the grape, gives the wine energy and length, carrying the dark fruit through to a long, persistent finish with notes of dark chocolate and iron.
A rare single-varietal Sousão from one of the Douro's most exciting small producers. Drink now with confidence, or cellar for five or more years.
