Description

The Grüner Veltliner Terrassen is juicy and elegant year after year, with apple fruit undertones with tobacco on the nose. On the palate, it reveals peppery notes, fine minerality, and delicate hints of orange zest, leaving a stimulating, fruity finish.

Grüner Veltliners from Austria’s Wachau region rank among the world’s truly great wines—and within this elite category, few can rival the 2023 Terrassen Grüner Veltliner Smaragd from Rudi Pichler. This is a towering expression of the grape.

Smaragd is the highest classification in the Wachau, reserved for Grüner Veltliners of remarkable intensity and depth. These wines are known for their incredible ageing potential, and this example—layered with vibrant citrus and orchard fruit, underpinned by striking minerality and spice—is clearly built to evolve beautifully over time.

Rudi Pichler stands among Austria’s most respected winemakers. He crafts his wines in the Wachau, the country’s most celebrated wine region—an area of breathtaking natural beauty, where steep, terraced vineyards cascade down to the banks of the Danube.

With family roots in the region dating back to 1731, Pichler commands some of the finest vineyard holdings in the Wachau. This particular wine comes from prized plots around Wösendorf and Joching, where diverse soils and sun-drenched slopes give rise to wines of extraordinary character and complexity. The steep terrain not only ensures excellent drainage but also maximises sun exposure, resulting in perfectly ripened fruit and exceptional concentration in the glass.

The estate focuses on traditional varieties such as Grüner Veltliner, Riesling, and Weissburgunder, all grown with sustainable practices to preserve soil health and biodiversity.

In the cellar, Rudi Pichler employs minimal intervention, using native yeasts for fermentation and aging the wines in stainless steel or large neutral oak casks to retain purity and terroir expression. Niederostrreich

Niederösterreich, or Lower Austria, is the largest wine-producing region in Austria and one of the most significant in terms of quality and diversity. The region's wine history dates back to Roman times, and it remains a cornerstone of Austrian viticulture. Niederösterreich is known for its varied terroirs, influenced by the Danube River and the surrounding Alps, which create ideal conditions for viticulture.

It is particularly renowned for its white wines, with Grüner Veltliner being the flagship grape. This variety thrives in Niederösterreich, producing wines that range from crisp and peppery to rich and complex. Other notable white varieties include Riesling, which flourishes in the steep vineyards along the Danube, and Sauvignon Blanc. While white wines dominate, Niederösterreich also produces elegant reds, with Zweigelt and Pinot Noir being the most prominent. The region’s diverse microclimates and soil types contribute to its reputation for producing some of Austria’s finest wines.
