Description

John Vickery is the acknowledged old master of Riesling in Australia, with an illustrious career spanning over fifty years, culminating in the extraordinary awards tally of more than fifty trophies and over four hundred gold medals. The Rieslings he crafted from Watervale (in the Clare Valley) and Eden Valley (in the Barossa) stand tall as the epitome of this most majestic grape variety, each with a unique South Australian and sub-regional thumbprint. Vickery wines are made in collaboration with our talented winemaking team, so that John's winemaking methods and knowledge will be preserved and passed on for generations to come, for the benefit of all lovers of classic Australian Riesling.

Pale straw with some golden hues beginning to come through, silver rim.

On the nose this wine is fresh, clean and delicate with lemon pith and minerality. Very subtle developed characters of shortbread and pastry crust. On the palate, lemon zest and grapefruit, balanced by brioche and crema catalana. Bouncy, salivating acid and slight phenolic characters provide good structure and a long, lingering finish.

Food Match: Sesame chicken salad with ginger and lime dressing.

Cellaring: Made to age, this Riesling will last in the cellar for 20+ years.

"As much as I enjoyed their Watervale Reserve, I love this even more. A small parcel of fruit from the Zander Quarry vineyard was put aside to make their Reserve. The extra ageing potential it offered set it apart from the rest of the fruit. Hence, it was given an extra two years in the cellar by the team prior to release but will benefit from plenty more.A vibrant green/gold. This is a glorious Riesling nose. Spices, lemon sherbet notes, limes, florals. Just gorgeous. Fine and focused with excellent length and crunchy acidity. Lingers beautifully on the finish. A really good Riesling, thrilling now, but even better with another decade under its belt. As would be easy to imagine, at the end of a tasting session, there are plenty of wines from which one can select for a glass that evening. This was an easy choice."

"Eden Valley riesling from the Zander Quarry Block vineyard. Reserve. As a three-year-old there’s no sign of this dipping into a mute phases, that’s for certain. This is developing steadily and well. Lime jelly and lemon sorbet with whispers of kero and citrus leaf. Excellent intensity on the palate but with a fluid, soft, rolling feel to it. There’s plenty of time yet to run but right now this is lifted, energetic and soft at once; it’s in a great drinking place. Drink 2022 to 2027+."
