From husband-and-wife team Andrés Carull and Marta Ribera, Tragolargo is a no-added-sulphur Monastrell grown on bush vines at 700 metres above sea level in Alicante, farmed organically and biodynamically with all grapes hand-harvested. Fermented with native yeasts and 30% whole bunch inclusion, the stems lend a lift of freshness that keeps the wine lively rather than heavy. The name says it all: "big gulp" is precisely the register this wine operates in. The nose offers dark blackberry, tangy damson, dusty cherry, raspberry, spice and a curl of thyme and rosemary, with the whole-bunch component adding a pleasing herbal-earthy undercurrent. On the palate it is rounded, with sweet and mature tannins, while its balanced acidity imparts freshness and vivacity. At 14% it carries more weight than you might expect from something this breezy, but there is no heaviness here. Serve slightly cool with charcuterie, lamb kofta, or anything off a charcoal grill.
