Description

Crafted by Ben Walgate, renowned for his pioneering spirit and deep respect for traditional winemaking—this English Colfondo is a bold departure from the conventional. Bottled on the lees, it delivers a naturally cloudy pour with layers of texture, savoury complexity, and a vibrant, unfiltered finish. Made in the Italian col fondo style but reimagined through an English lens, the 2022 vintage is a celebration of wild fermentation, low intervention, and authentic expression. It’s everything Prosecco isn’t and proudly so.

Pale gold and naturally hazy. The nose is rich, creamy, floral and exotic. Medium bodied on the palate with a touch of richness. Textural, the fine bubbles and bright acidity keeping everything together. A great wine to enjoy as an alternative to champagne.

40% Pinot Gris, 28% Bacchus, 12% Pinot Noir, 12% Gamay & 8% Chenin. Grapes grown according to Regenerative and Biodynamic principles at Tillingham vineyard, East Sussex. Crafted with care and minimal intervention, this wine begins with hand-picked grapes harvested late in the season for optimal ripeness. After crushing, the juice is directly pressed into a mix of stainless steel and neutral oak vats, where it rests until spring. At this point, it's blended and bottled with a touch of sugar, allowing a gentle re-fermentation to take place in bottle. Un-disgorged, the result is a vibrant, naturally sparkling wine with depth, texture, and a raw, honest character.

Walgate Wines

Walgate Wines is the exciting solo venture of Ben Walgate, one of England’s most innovative winemakers, launched after his departure from Tillingham in 2023. Based in a characterful converted warehouse in Rye, East Sussex—also home to a buzzing weekend wine bar—Ben produces a tightly curated selection of still and sparkling wines that champion both terroir and thoughtful craftsmanship. Working with top growers across southeast England, many of whom farm biodynamically or regeneratively, he takes a hands-off approach in the cellar, using wild ferments, minimal sulphur, and vessels like fibreglass and old oak. His debut wines—a vibrant Pinot Meunier Rosé, a textured Pinot Blanc from Essex, and an elegant Blanc de Noirs—have quickly drawn acclaim for their purity, finesse, and sense of place. With Walgate Wines, Ben is not just making wine—he’s helping redefine what English wine can be.
