Description

Dark fruit and cocoa lead this saturating and brooding bouquet. The palate is similarly intense, a different iteration of Felton Road, but it nevertheless has the openness and immediate silky appeal. Sandalwood, dark chocolate and cranberry lingers on a sustained and immensely impressive finish. Certainly no stage fright in this new performer!

MacMuir Vineyard is located just one km east of The Elms Vineyard on Felton Road. It is a gentle north facing slope that lies immediately below the hills of the Bannockburn Gold Sluicings, now a historic park. MacMuir was originally part of the Calvert property and farmed by Felton Road since 2001. The land was being used to produce various crops of hay and straw for use in our compost, mulch and winter feed for animals, as well as a small productive nut orchard. In 2010, Felton Road purchased the land from the Calvert family and planting began in 2012 after an extensive period of preparing the soils to optimise soil structure and fertility. Nigel Greening, Felton Road’s owner, is the son of a Muir clan member: Betty Muir, hence the title MacMuir (son of a Muir). Bannockburn seems to have a historic connection to the clan with the eastern half of Bannockburn being known as the Cairnmuir arm, and a number of vineyards in Bannockburn already sporting the Muir name.

"A rather smoky red on the nose with earthy, shiitake mushroom, lead pencil, dark cherry and strawberry aromas and flavors. Full-bodied and layered with lots of cloves and black pepper. Only the second bottling here. From biodynamically grown grapes with Demeter certification. Screw cap."

"The 2022 MacMuir Pinot Noir is here in its second vintage, a new wine in the lineup for Felton Road. On the nose, this is saturated in red fruit flavor, with pomegranate molasses, white and pink peppercorns, violets and sandalwood. There's a lovely flow to this wine; it has loads of flavor, but it is svelte, polished and gentle all the way. A sleek finish rounds it out. I like it very much. 14.5% alcohol, sealed under screw cap. Drink to 2035."

Erin Larkin, The Wine Advocate (December 2023)

"Bannockburn. Vegan. Certified organic and biodynamic.
Deep ruby. Very meaty, with plenty of ripe black fruit layered with smoky, grilled notes. Chewy texture, elegant, velvety tannins. Structured, very long and delicious to drink now, but has the structure and depth to age for a long time. Drink 2023 - 2040."

Felton Road

Considerable research by Stewart Elms in 1991 identified the north facing slopes at the end of Felton Road, Bannockburn as being one of the warmest and most ideal sites in Central Otago for the growing and production of premium wine. The three different soils in the area are free draining with low fertility characteristics, and combined with the unique climate, are ideal for the production of premium quality Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Riesling.

Central Otago

Central Otago, located in New Zealand's South Island, is renowned for its exceptional and distinctive wines. The region's cool climate, marked by cold winters and warm, dry summers, along with its varied soils, creates ideal conditions for viticulture. The area is especially celebrated for its world-class Pinot Noir, known for its deep, vibrant flavours, complex aromas, and elegant structure. It also produces high-quality whites, including Riesling and Chardonnay, which exhibit crisp acidity, rich fruit characteristics, and a mineral edge.
