Collection: Natural Wine

Natural wine has no legal definition, which is worth saying up front. Broadly it means wine made with as little intervention as possible: organic or biodynamic farming, wild yeasts rather than cultured ones, no additions or corrections in the cellar, and little or no added sulphur. Where a grower sits on that scale is a matter of judgement rather than certification.

What you taste is a wine that has been left largely to its own devices. Often that means a brighter, more vivid character and a texture that feels alive in the glass. Sometimes it means cloudiness, a faint spritz or a note of something wild, which are marks of how the wine was made rather than faults.

We taste everything before it comes in. These are bottles we think are genuinely good, not just interestingly made.

Asked for something like a Rioja, got better

Went in with a vague idea and came out with a Monastrell I had never heard of. Half the price of what I usually buy and better.

Do you sell any biodynamic wine?

Yes, search for biodynamic in the search bar.

Is sulphur in wine harmful?

Sulphur in wine, often in the form of sulphur dioxide (SO2), is used as a preservative and to prevent oxidation and bacterial spoilage. For most people, the levels of sulphur in wine are harmless and unnoticeable. However, a small percentage of individuals may be sensitive to sulphites, experiencing mild allergic reactions like headaches or respiratory issues. Wine producers must label wines containing more than 10 mg/l of sulphites. Generally, the benefits of sulphur in maintaining wine quality outweigh the risks for most consumers.

What does biodynamic wine mean?

Biodynamic wine is produced using biodynamic farming practices, which treat the vineyard as a holistic ecosystem. This method includes organic farming techniques, the use of natural preparations, and alignment with lunar and cosmic cycles. It aims to enhance the health and vitality of the soil, plants, and environment, resulting in wines that reflect the true character of their terroir. Biodynamic wines avoid synthetic chemicals and emphasise sustainability and ecological balance.

What does unfiltered mean in wine?

Unfiltered wine is wine that has not undergone the filtration process to remove particles such as yeast, grape skins, and other sediment. By skipping filtration, the wine retains more of its natural flavours, textures, and aromas. This can result in a richer, more complex profile. However, unfiltered wines may appear cloudy and have sediment at the bottom of the bottle, which is a normal and harmless characteristic of these wines.

What is natural wine?

Natural wine is made with minimal intervention in both the vineyard and winery. Grapes are typically grown organically or biodynamically, and winemaking processes avoid additives, such as commercial yeasts, sugars, and sulphites. Fermentation occurs with native yeasts, and the wine is often unfiltered and unfined, resulting in a product that reflects the pure expression of the grapes and terroir. Natural wines can vary greatly in flavour and appearance, often showcasing unique and sometimes unexpected characteristics.

What is Orange wine?

Orange wine is a type of white wine made by fermenting white grapes with their skins and seeds, similar to red wine production. This process gives the wine its distinctive orange or amber hue and imparts unique flavours and tannins. Orange wines often have complex, robust profiles with notes of dried fruit, nuts, and spices. They are typically more textural and can be enjoyed with a variety of foods.

What makes a wine not vegan?

Vegan wine is made without using animal-derived products in the fining process. Traditional fining agents like egg whites, gelatin, or isinglass are replaced with alternatives such as bentonite clay or activated charcoal, ensuring the wine is suitable for vegans.
