Tasting note

Moscatel de Setúbal, produced & bottled by Jose Maria da Fonseca, from the Moscatel de Setúbal grape and aged in oak barrels. Using their exceptional 2017 harvest, with all the adversities of drought & extreme heat, it truly shows the terroir's exceptional quality and complexity. A sweet treat with real finesse all wrapped up in a beautiful box.

Aged in used oak to impart less characteristics of the oak, yet keeping its softening effects on the wine. No ageing in bottle is necessary due to its natural occurring oxidation, meaning this wine will (if kept properly) last many months after opening, with no change in profile.

In the glass you can really see the beautiful colour of this amber nectar, with citrus, orange peel & ripe apricots on the nose. Followed on the palate by cinnamon, hints of dried fruit, a smooth roasted hazelnut, with a surprisingly persistent finish.

Serve at a temperature of 10ºC with fruit, ice cream or sorbet; as a dessert wine serve at 16ºC with apple crumble, Sicilian lemon tart and any dessert containing honey or almond.

Region

Peninsula de Setubal

The Peninsula de Setúbal, located southwest of Lisbon along Portugal’s Atlantic coast, is renowned for its distinctive and high-quality wines. It benefits from a Mediterranean climate with cooling maritime influences, which contribute to its unique terroir.
The area is particularly famous for its fortified wines, especially Muscat of Setúbal, made from the Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains grape. This wine is known for its rich, honeyed sweetness, complex aromas of dried fruits and nuts, and a smooth, luscious texture. It also produces notable reds from varieties like Castelão and Trincadeira, offering full-bodied wines with rich fruit flavours and balanced tannins.
