Description

Deep cherry red. The nose is fresh red berry compote and soft spice notes. On the palate the wine is rich and enveloping, the wine fills the palate whilst remaining light and fresh. Flavours of fresh tart raspberry are bright and supported by a core of darker berries and plum. Silky tannins that hint at the seamless French oak add further to the length as the softly dissolve on the satisfied finish.

First made back in 1997 and still definitely one of the sentimental favourites in our Kilikanoon portfolio, the Prodigal continues to set the standard for Clare Valley old vine Grenache. Sourced entirely from two hand picked and hand pruned vineyards in the Watervale district, aged 65 and 70 years of age. Collectively, the blend continues to set the standard for old vine Grenache in the Clare valley.

Being 100% dry grown, the favourable growing conditions and timely natural rainfall encouraged healthy vine growth and acid retention in both vineyards right up until the blocks were harvested in late March. Both vineyard parcels were processed separately and kept individually until final blending took place using traditional vinification methods of basket pressing, aging for 15 months in seasoned, small French oak casks and final bottling without fining or filtration.
