Cantamilano is a single vineyard on a plateau at around five hundred metres, on the border between Murillo de Rio Leza and Ribafrecha in eastern Rioja. The soils are cool, shallow and clay heavy, which limits how deep the roots go and naturally keeps the vines in check. Paco Garcia planted here specifically to see what Garnacha would do at altitude in this corner of the region.
It is one hundred per cent Garnacha, picked by hand, with around ten months in French oak barrels that have already seen several wines. The point is texture rather than flavour from the wood, and it works. Bright cherry red in the glass, with strawberry and red cherry fruit, orange peel, honey and a lovely floral note of orange blossom. Silky and fresh rather than broad, with fine tannins and real elegance for the money.
Give it half an hour in the fridge before serving. Good with charcuterie, roast pork or anything off the barbecue.
