Tasting note

Tempranillo Blanco has one of the better origin stories in Spanish wine. In 1988 a grower found a single vine in Murillo de Rio Leza bearing white grapes where the rest of the bunch was red, a spontaneous mutation of Tempranillo. It was propagated, studied and finally authorised in Rioja in 2007. Paco Garcia are based in that same village, which makes this something close to a local speciality.

El Yergo is the unoaked version, made to show the grape rather than the cellar. Pear and white peach, a floral top note, and a good streak of citrus running underneath. What sets it apart from most Rioja whites is the texture, which is broader and more savoury than the aromatics suggest, finishing dry and faintly saline.

Serve it cold with white fish, roast vegetables or a Spanish tortilla. It also stands up surprisingly well to garlicky prawns.

Bodegas Paco García was founded 2001. Respect for tradition is paramount, allied to a reliance on meticulous winemaking and use of state-of-the-art winemaking technology. The marriage of old vineyard parcels and modern winemaking techniques have given rise to Rioja wines that speak of fruit purity, vibrancy and authenticity. Recently rebranded and with some thrilling new wines in the line-up, Paco García continue to bring Rioja to the modern era.

Famous for its reds, primarily made from Tempranillo, which produce wines known for their depth, rich fruit flavours, and well-integrated oak characteristics, the region also produces notable blends incorporating Garnacha and Graciano. Rioja’s whites, including those from Viura and Malvasía, are celebrated for their freshness, aromatic complexity, and balanced acidity. Historically, Rioja has a winemaking tradition dating back to Roman times. The region gained prominence in the 19th century with the influence of French winemaking techniques, and today it is recognised for its commitment to both traditional and modern practices. Rioja's classification system, including Crianza, Reserva, and Gran Reserva, reflects its dedication to quality and aging potential, making it a benchmark for Spanish wine.
