"Black cherries, cigar box, haw fruit, oriental herbs, black pepper, roasted red chili pepper and tapenade on the nose. A hint of savory cocoa powder, too. Juicy and very fresh on the medium-bodied palate with firm, fresh tannins and a long, peppery finish. Racy, cool and energetic. Very drinkable." James Suckling 94/100
Unlike the broader, more sun-drenched expressions of Bolgheri, San Leonardo leans firmly toward classic Bordeaux in style – marked by its restraint, balance, and purity of fruit. The 2018 vintage embodies this legacy – elegant, expressive, and crafted with the kind of quiet confidence that defines great wines built for longevity.
The Carménère grapes are sourced from some of the estate's oldest vineyards, rooted in sandy soils at elevations between 150 and 200 metres above sea level. After careful hand-harvesting, the grapes undergo fermentation, followed by 24 months of ageing in first, second, and third-passage French oak barriques. The wine is then bottle-aged for an additional period to achieve optimal integration and complexity.
