Description

"Black cherries, cigar box, haw fruit, oriental herbs, black pepper, roasted red chili pepper and tapenade on the nose. A hint of savory cocoa powder, too. Juicy and very fresh on the medium-bodied palate with firm, fresh tannins and a long, peppery finish. Racy, cool and energetic. Very drinkable." James Suckling 94/100

Unlike the broader, more sun-drenched expressions of Bolgheri, San Leonardo leans firmly toward classic Bordeaux in style – marked by its restraint, balance, and purity of fruit. The 2018 vintage embodies this legacy – elegant, expressive, and crafted with the kind of quiet confidence that defines great wines built for longevity.

The Carménère grapes are sourced from some of the estate's oldest vineyards, rooted in sandy soils at elevations between 150 and 200 metres above sea level. After careful hand-harvesting, the grapes undergo fermentation, followed by 24 months of ageing in first, second, and third-passage French oak barriques. The wine is then bottle-aged for an additional period to achieve optimal integration and complexity.

Tenuta San Leonardo

Tenuta San Leonardo, located in Trentino, is one of Italy’s most prestigious estates, known for producing elegant, Bordeaux-inspired wines with a distinct Alpine character. The Guerrieri Gonzaga family has overseen the estate for generations, cultivating Cabernet Sauvignon, Carmenère, Merlot, and indigenous varieties using organic farming methods.

Winemaking focuses on tradition and precision: grapes are hand-harvested, fermented with native yeasts in concrete vats, and aged in French oak barrels. The flagship San Leonardo wine is renowned for its complexity, finesse, and longevity, often compared to top Bordeaux. The estate’s commitment to terroir and minimal intervention defines its refined, timeless style.

Trentino-Alto Adige

Trentino-Alto Adige, a dynamic wine region in northern Italy, is celebrated for its diverse and high-quality wines. Located in the Alps, it features a range of climates and soils, from alpine to Mediterranean, ideal for viticulture. It is renowned for its crisp, aromatic whites like Pinot Grigio and Gewürztraminer, which thrive in the cooler temperatures. Trentino-Alto Adige also produces excellent reds, including robust Pinot Noir and spicy Lagrein. Its varied terroirs, from valley floors to hillside vineyards, contribute to its wines' complexity and character. Combining traditional techniques with modern innovation, Trentino-Alto Adige offers a captivating wine experience.
