Tasting note

Field blends of old vines planted in the village of ‘La Aguilera’ at 860 metres over red clay and limestone soils in the Burgos province. Vines are over 50 years old, North facing sites in the hillsides overlooking the Gromejón Valley; this cooler exposition helps compensate the heat of the year, giving a fresh and vibrant style not typical of Ribera del Duero. Approachable and seriously well balanced.

Aromas of blackberry, blueberry and dark cherry, vanilla, sweet spice and chalky tannin. A fresher style of Ribera del Duero that aims for elegance over extraction.

Viticulture is certified organic. No herbicides, pesticides nor synthetic products are used. The vineyards are not irrigated and are worked as little as possible to encourage the growth of natural cover crops.

Grapes are hand harvested, foot trodden and co-fermented together without destemming. Fermentation takes place with native yeast during the next 8-9 following months after harvest, and the wine undergoes malolactic and ageing in French oak barrels, 15% of which are new, for 19 months. The wine sees no fining, filtration or clarification.

Jorge Monzón is redefining Ribera del Duero, crafting wines that stand apart for their elegance, restraint, and deep expression of terroir. In 2010, he and his partner Isabel Rodero founded Dominio del Águila in La Aguilera, bringing Jorge’s impressive experience to this relatively new venture. After studying viticulture in Bordeaux and Burgundy, Jorge gained valuable experience at Domaine de la Romanée-Conti and Vega Sicilia. While at Bodegas Arzuaga-Navarro, he discovered century-old vineyards, which he now farms organically and biodynamically. These unique sites produce complex, age-worthy wines that beautifully blend tradition with modern expertise.

Ribera del Duero

Ribera del Duero is a prestigious wine region located in northern Spain, renowned for its exceptional red wines, primarily made from the Tempranillo grape, locally known as Tinta del País or Tinto Fino. The region spans the upper valley of the Duero River and benefits from a continental climate with hot, dry summers and harsh winters, which contribute to the unique character of its wines. The combination of high altitude, limestone-rich soils, and significant temperature variations between day and night enhances the concentration and complexity of the grapes. Ribera del Duero is home to some of Spain’s most celebrated wineries, including Vega Sicilia and Dominio de Pingus, which produce bold, full-bodied wines with rich flavours of dark fruit, spices, and a distinct earthy quality. Established as a Denomination of Origin (DO) in 1982, the region has quickly become synonymous with high-quality, age-worthy wines that compete on the world stage.
